After a tragedy that occurred this past Saturday night (June 17) at Beyond Wonderland at The Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington, leaving two people dead and three more injured, electronic artists are reacting.
Around 8:30 p.m. local time on the first day of the two-day event, a shooter started fire in the festival's tent area. Before police were able to capture the shooter, three people were hurt and two people died.
Insomniac Events' founder and CEO Pasquale Rotella provided additional information regarding the shooting on Monday (June 19), saying that "it is our understanding that the incident stemmed from an isolated situation that escalated, leading the assailant to flee the area. An officer involved-shooting then occurred to neutralize the event."
In addition, Rotella stated that at the request of local enforcement, the festival was continued both during and after the event "to ensure the majority of attendees stayed away from the campground area where the incident took place. Our staff worked in close coordination with local authorities to secure the area, while also preserving it for investigators to conduct their work in a smaller, isolated section."
Following the incident, the festival's second day was postponed. Other electronic music performers on the weekend's lineup were Marshmello, Afrojack, and Kaskade and deadmau5.
Kx5, Marshmello, Afrojack, Kaleena Zanders, Dillon Francis, Hannah Wants, Ray Volpe, Malaa, and Subtronics are just a few of the performers who have made statements about the shooting on social media, as have other individuals and organizations from the international dance music community.
Kx5 reposted Rotella's message on Instagram, saying, "We are deeply saddened by the occurrence that happened at Beyond Wonderland this past weekend and our heartfelt condolences go out to all those affected by this terrible tragedy. We support our community and would like to share [Insomniac Events and Pasquale Rotella’s] statement for further clarification."
