Glasgow techno institution Soma Records celebrate 35 years with specially-curated SOMA35 EP remix series

Celebrating a truly vital and enduring presence in the global techno landscape, Soma Records’ 35 Year anniversary project will be brought to life through a series of specially-curated remix EPs.

Co-founded in 1991 by the iconic electronic music duo Slam, Dave Clarke, and Glenn Gibbons (alongside Nigel Hirst and Jim Muotune), the Glasgow-based Soma label is a techno institution. With a long-standing reputation for quality and longevity, the imprint has played a foundational role in the development of techno both in the UK and worldwide, and in the discovery and support of exceptional musical talent.

Glenn Gibbons said: “Back in 1991, in the early days of Soma in a dank Glasgow basement, we could never have imagined that the record label we started would still be alive and kicking in 2026.

Soma has gone through many different iterations over the years, working with and championing hundreds of artists, but the original idea has always remained the same — to release quality electronic music that moves us.

To celebrate 35 years, we invited some of our favourite producers to remix tracks from across the Soma catalogue that resonate with them personally. We’ve been blown away by the results and can’t wait for the project to be heard. Soma 35 and still alive!”

Showcasing the breath of Soma’s reach across the techno scene past and present, the SOMA35 EP project brings together a selection of the biggest names in techno that Slam and Soma have worked with over the years, alongside new artists whose sound naturally aligns with the label’s distinct sonic identity.

It’s only fitting that label heads Slam kick off this landmark project, marking a colossal milestone - the label’s 700th release - with ‘SOMA 35.1’. This specially-curated release features powerful reinterpretations of Slam’s seminal track “Vapour” by Mark Broom and FJAAK, alongside fresh remixes of the classic “Program” by Vril and Linear Phase.

In keeping with Soma’s ever forward-thinking ethos, each artist was invited to select a track that resonates both with the label’s rich legacy and the pulse of contemporary techno, resulting in a release that bridges past and present with precision and energy.

SOMA35 features work from Slam, Surgeon, Oscar Mulero, Luke Slater, Carl Craig, Lewis Fautzi, Nørbak, Phil Berg, Phara, Lindsey Herbert, Nastia Reigel, Justyn Nell plus many more, spread across 6 vinyl releases (plus digital). Expect to hear some classic Soma tracks plus some curveballs thrown in for good measure!

Each remix has been chosen for how it fits within the current music scene, reflecting the energy and direction of contemporary club culture while reinforcing Soma’s commitment to techno. The project gave each remixer license to choose from Soma’s vast back catalogue to find hidden gems that still resonate within today’s landscape, with the aim of giving these a new, fresh spin.

Slam, said: “Soma Records was born out of a need to create a platform for our own productions. Starting an independent label felt like the natural progression. We had all grown up listening to post-punk during our formative years, when independent labels such as Factory Records in Manchester and Postcard Records in Glasgow played a hugely influential role, alongside many others throughout the UK.

At that time, there was little representation from independent labels dedicated solely to electronic music in the UK. We were drawn to the raw aesthetic and DIY ethos of labels emerging from the US, particularly from Detroit and Chicago. It therefore felt natural to channel that spirit into our own vision for Soma Records.

As the label began to make an impact, we were approached by producers from around the world who wanted to become part of that vision as well.”

After 35 years, the label continues to operate at the centre of the genre, pushing a modern sound that has always been at the core of Soma’s ethos.

SOMA 35.1 is out digitally on 26 June followed by vinyl on 24 July via Soma Records, pre-order here.

Slam’s tour dates are listed below, including a special return to Glasgow Green for TRNSMT. This marks their debut appearance at the festival and their first performance there since supporting The Stone Roses.
